This course will take you on a journey through the history of the Quran, as revelation and text. You will gain insights into the widely accepted Muslim narrative of the text's history, as well as other perspectives on that history within the Muslim tradition. The course will also delve into Quranic interpretation, providing a better grasp of the diverse ways in which the Quran has been analyzed and understood over the centuries.
The course will also examine the history of Western translations of the Quran and address the challenges of reading the Quran in translation. An important aspect of the course will be exploring the question of translation as interpretation, considering how different perspectives shape and influence the interpretation and translation of the text.
An integral part of the course will be the discussion of contemporary topics that frequently appear in the news, such as jihad, gender, and sexuality. These discussions will give you an opportunity to engage critically with these issues, considering both historical contexts and modern interpretations. By examining how these topics are addressed in the Quran and in various commentaries, you will develop a more nuanced understanding of their complexities and diverse Muslim perspectives. This approach aims to foster a more well-rounded and informed view of these significant and often contentious subjects.
You will engage with primary sources through English translations of the Quran and classic Quranic commentaries, alongside secondary sources written by contemporary Muslim scholars, clergy, and academic specialists in Quranic studies. Arabic is not required for this course, but students who know Arabic will be able to approach the Quran and other primary sources in Arabic, allowing for a deeper and more nuanced understanding..
